'Barbaric atmosphere': Abhishek Banerjee blames 'BJP members disguised as Kurmis' for convoy attack

By Suryagni Roy: Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Friday commented on the attack on West Bengal minister Birbaha Hansda's vehicle and said agitations cannot take the form of hooliganism.

Cars of media personnel were also attacked in the incident, he said, and accused the BJP of staging the attack.

Giving out details about the attack incident, Banerjee said, "Some people created a barbaric atmosphere and attacked Hansda's car while we were on the way."

"Windshields of cars were vandalised and cars of media personnel were also attacked," he added.

Birbaha Hansda's vehicle was vandalised in Paschim Medinipur district on Friday as members of the Kurmi community allegedly hurled stones at Abhishek Banerjee's convoy, in which she was travelling, officials told PTI.

The incident happened in Salboni where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to attend a party programme on Saturday.

Speaking further about the incident, Abhishek Banerjee said, "I'll talk in case there are any issues. Different groups already spoke to me while I was in Purulia and Bankura."

"Agitations cannot take the form of hooliganism. Scarves were used to pull TMC workers travelling on bikes. What kind of agitation is this? No one will stop you if you agitate peacefully," Banerjee said.

"Why use bricks when you want to talk?" he asked.
ABHISHEK BANERJEE ACCUSES BJP OF ATTACK

Abhishek Banerjee, a Z-plus protectee, led a roadshow in Jhargram's Binpur and Gopiballavpur as part of his Trinamooley Nabojowar (new wave in Trinamool) campaign. Following the rally, he was travelling through Salboni when members of the Kurmi community, who are protesting and are demanding ST status, gathered on both sides of the road, a party leader told PTI.

As his car moved ahead, they allegedly started throwing stones at the convoy.

"The vehicle of Hansda, which was in the convoy, was damaged in the attack," the Diamond Harbour MP said.

A huge police contingent was rushed to the spot to control the situation, officials said.

It could not be immediately known if anyone was arrested.

Meanwhile, Banerjee alleged that the BJP was behind the attack.

"I support democratic protests. If somebody wants to come to me and speak, they are always free to do so, but what form of protest is this that you are throwing stones, beating up people, and ransacking vehicles?" he said.

"I believe that some miscreants of BJP disguised as members of the Kurmi community are behind this attack to malign TMC's campaign," he alleged, addressing a party programme late in the night in Gopiballavpur.

He also demanded a statement from the leaders of the Kurmi community over the attack within 48 hours.

"I am giving a 48-hour ultimatum to the leaders of the Kurmi community. They should clarify whether they were behind this incident. If they don't give a statement, it will prove that they were behind it, and then the law will take its course," he said.

Hansda, whose car was vandalised in the attack, said violence can never be the form of a democratic protest.

"This can never be a fight for the rights of a community. All those who have thrown stones are outsiders, and are using the garb of being members of a specific community to justify the violence," said Hansda, the MoS for Forests.

'Try to ban RSS, Congress will burn to ashes': Karnataka BJP chief's challenge

By India Today News Desk: A fresh controversy has erupted after Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge's comment on banning the RSS and Bajrang Dal in the southern state. Karnataka unit BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel has hit back at Priyank Kharge's comment that his party is ready to impose a ban on Bajrang Dal if it tries to disrupt peace in the state. Nalin Kateel said if Congress tries to ban Bajrang Dal or the RSS, it will "burn to ashes".

"Priyank Kharge spoke about banning the RSS. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a RSS swayamsevak and is in a central position. We are all swayamsevaks of the RSS. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and the Narasimharao government also tried to impose a ban on the RSS but couldn't succeed," the Karnataka BJP president said.

"Try to ban Bajrang dal and RSS, Congress will burn to ashes. It is better for Priyank kharge to know about the history of the country. Priyank kharge should mind his tongue," Nalin Kumar Kateel said.
WHAT DID PRIYANK KHARGE SAY ON RSS?

Congress lawmaker from Chittapur assembly seat Priyank Kharge, who is the son of Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, had said, "We will not hesitate to ban organisations which indulge in moral policing. It might be RSS or Bajrang Dal or any other communal organisation."

Taking to Twitter, Priyank Kharge said, "If any religious or political outfit tries to disrupt peace, spread communal hatred and bring disrepute to Karnataka, our Government will not hesitate to tackle them legally or ban them. Even if it is RSS or any other organization."

He also said orders and legislation enforced under the previous BJP regime like school textbook revision and anti-conversion laws, which are against the state's interest, would be revised or withdrawn by the new Congress government after reviewing them.

WHAT IS THE 'BAN RSS' CONTROVERSY?

In the run-up to the Karnataka elections, the Congress in its election manifesto had promised to ban the Bajrang Dal. The manifesto had sparked massive controversy, with the RSS and the BJP slamming the Congress over its poll promise.

After an all-out attack by the BJP, Congress jumped into damage control mode, saying there was no suggestion from the party to ban the Bajrang Dal if elected to power in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also attacked the Congress party on the issue of the Bajrang Dal ban and said "First they (Congress) locked up Lord Ram and now they have vowed to lock up those who chant Jai Bajrang Bali.

"It is the misfortune of the country that the Congress had a problem with Lord Ram and now it has difficulty with those who say Jai Bajrang Bali,” he further added.

The Congress came to power in the southern state after securing victory on 135 seats in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly, ousting the BJP from its lone southern citadel with a comfortable majority.
